Happy New Year!
Thank you to all our friends, family, and working partners from around the world who have worked with and supported us to make our launch in 2015 such a success.
Here’s to another year of working together in changing peoples lives.
Laboratory closure during Christmas 2015
Firstly we would like to thank everyone who has chosen to partner with us as their laboratory. It’s been an incredible opening year, and the feedback from happy surgeons and patients has made all the hard work very worth while.
But Christmas will soon be upon us, and the team will be taking a very well earned break to enjoy time with family and friends who have been very supportive of us all during the months of long working days needed to ensure we keep the quality and service at the level we aimed to offer when we started the laboratory (although this ambition never ends, and we have a few more improvements that you will see over the coming months).
Closed from Thursday 24th December 2015
Re-opening on Monday 4th January 2016
Cases required for fitting before Christmas closure
All cases that need fitting before the lab closure should be received by us on the 9th December
Any work received after the 9th December will need an additional 6 days to the usual 10 working days required in the lab to allow for the holiday closure period
For example a job received in the lab on the 14th December 2015 would be returned for fit on the 7th January 2016
Please get in touch if you have any cases you need quickly over this period so we can pre book them and avoid disappointment for your patients.

We are very happy to say we have overcome one of the last stumbling blocks on the full digital flow, which were the gold crowns.
You do not need to have an intra oral scanner to make use of this new service from our lab. For traditional impressions we cast them, prepare the models and then scan anddigitise them using our 3Shape true colour scanner.
This means that we can now offer incredibly accurate gold crowns with no waste at all, so you only pay for the gold that has been used in the final delivers crown.
Again, we are very grateful to Argen Digital UK from Skillbond for allowing us to be one of the UK’s first Beta testers of this new digital solution.
As a completely digital laboratory all the work that comes into nexus will be scanned in order to produce the most accurate frameworks or final crowns using our partners from all over the world.
Being a digital laboratory it also ensures we can make us of some options that are unique to digital dental technology, such its the Atlantis Core file system
Using this system allow us to design the ideal custom abutments, and then move immediately to producing a framework from the Atlantis core file to ensure the best possible fit, as there is no need for us to wait for the abutments to come back, powder coat them and rescan.
We are grateful that Atlantis allowed us to share this highly accurate and efficient workflow in a recent official video they have released
We use this technology to produce incredibly accurate abutments and copings/frameworks, such as these below which we recently received back from Atlantis (abutments) and Argen Digital UK by Skillbond (SLM copings and frameworks) which we recently shared when lecturing at FutureLabs 2015
The image below is exactly how they come back, with the little polishing protecting rim still on which allows us to rubber back to a perfect marginal finish
Which is what you see here – the molar coping on the right blends perfectly into the margin of the Atlantis abutment it was designed on
Which is how we produce all our work now
Although we are showing SLM frameworks and copings here, we can choose from a huge range of materials to meet each restorations needs, be it metal, zirconia, emax or the new polymer/hybrid materials.
So, regardless of wether you have a scanner or take traditional impressions, you can still benefit from the benefits of digital dentistry when you work with us at nexus.

Nexus Dental Laboratory gains Trios 3 Validated laboratory status
The team are very excited to announce that we are now a fully validated 3shape Trios ready laboratory. What does this mean? Simply that we have been able to demonstrate that we can receive Trios digital impression files through the 3Shape Communicate system, and then use our own in house 3Shape scanner and software to build a virtual model and restorations which were all then sent off to 3Shape for inspection and quality control.
By choosing a nexus dental as your Trios Ready laboratory you can be assured that your work will be produced to the highest standards possible, using the best available printing and milling services and partners worldwide, before they are hand finished by our small team of highly skilled and experienced GDC registered dental technicians.

3Shape TRIOS makes impression taking faster and easier
It is accurate, spray and powder free, and provides a quick
and comfortable experience for patients.
With TRIOS, you can give us your order within minutes after
scanning and we can start designing right away.
Get your restorations done faster than ever before.
Once added you can simply choose us from your list of approved laboratories and send your files directly to us from your scan Trios scan unit.
We are also one of the leading Beta testers for the Atlantis intra oral implant scanning, so we can restore implant cases for you directly from intra oral scans using the ELOS scan bodies.
We can then produce beautiful models like the ones below with our printing partner of excellence, 3Dmedicalprint.
This case is courtesy of Dr Tim Doswell who placed and scanned the implant at The Raglan Suite in Harrogate.
Which Iain and Lisa will use to create beautiful implant restorations like the one below that we restored with Dr David Veige
We’re ready and look forward to working with you!
The journey continues to get more exciting for the team at nexus Dental Laboratory, and we wanted to take a moment to share with you some of our initial thoughts and feelings on opening and running the laboratory, as well as extending a big thank you to those who have supported us on our way.
I am so grateful to everyone who has offered us their time and their support in this project. The transition from laboratory manager to director of a new dental lab was always going to be both challenging and rewarding, alongside the change from being employed to self-employed, but despite the long hours ahead of us, we are passionate about what we do and what the laboratory stands for, and we want to say our thanks to everyone who has made this possible for us.
As well as excited at embarking on this new chapter, we were all initially quite nervous about the venture, but the level of support from family and friends, peers and trade companies, in setting up the new laboratory has been overwhelming, and we’re confident that the high quality setting and products that you have all put your faith in will go above and beyond expectations.
Whether you have been following this endeavour from the very start, or you’ve joined us along the way, we cannot express enough how grateful we are for your support. We always knew that setting up a new laboratory with such a high spec was going to be difficult, and the project has seen unexpected delays at times, but we’re certain that it will all definitely be worth it. We cannot wait for everything to finally be up and running ( a few more things are in the pipeline), giving the lab a cohesion that will guarantee we are able to offer the right solutions to our clients and their patients needs.
Together, nexus Dental Laboratory has an amazing team behind it and a lab filled with technology that is truly cutting edge. The combination of our expertise and dedication to our craft plus high quality tools means we will be taking dentistry and dental technology in some interesting and fun directions with the new digital tools, and production partnerships we have. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for nexus, and invite you to keep following our lab updates to see how things are progressing and how we’re constantly improving.
Once again, I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported the lab, the team, and myself in this, and we hope you’re looking forward to seeing how the future of nexus Dental Laboratory unfolds as much as we are.
Although we are a laboratory that embraces the very latest in technology, and believe that the latest materials, technology and training must be used to ensure that your patients receive the very best quality and service available.
We also fully appreciate that the key element which makes for a successful partnership with your surgery team is the skilled technicians who you will be dealing with, and will be using the latest tools and materials to help you to restore your patients smiles.
At nexus we are proud to have a small dedicated team of dental technicians who all have at least 20 years of technical experience, ensuring you are only ever dealing with a skilled GDC registered dental technician.

Gareth Playle (Trainee dental technician)
Gareth has recently joined our team as a trainee dental technician. We believe the only way to achieve and ensure the high standards our surgeons need is to train the next generation of technicians in the practices we employ at nexus.
As well as getting one on one training in the lab, Gareth is attending the Dental Technology course at Leeds Dental School
It was a huge honour for Steve to have been presented with an award for Innovation and Support in Promoting British Dental Technology by the Dental Laboratories Association President, Jonathan Bill at the British Dental Association Awards ceremony on Saturday evening.
This year the awards ceremony and dinner closed off their highly successful Congress, and saw professionals from all sectors of dentistry awarded for their efforts in providing the public with dental excellence.
Stephen Hancocks OBE, was a fantastic Master of Ceremonies, and kept the whole event entertaining and interesting.
The work of The British Bite Mark initiative was acknowledged for promoting British Dental Technology, and the patient benefits that come with work produced within our well regulated and monitored British dental profession.
I hope everyone can be as proud of British Dental Technology as I was to hear that all this effort has recently secured the return of over £8,000,000 of work to UK dental laboratories.
The British Bite Mark has been a fantastic initiative, but only because it has been adopted by so many who all believe in the value of Great British Dental Technology and the Great British Dentistry it supports for UK patients.
Thanks to the hard work of everyone in this public awareness campaign we have seen the acceptance and adoption of this as a standard by many practices that believe in providing the public with medical devices that are carefully created and monitored within one of (if not the most) stringently regulated dental sector in the world.
Jonathan Bill, did a fantastic job of relaying the story of the fantastic work carried out by GDC registered technicians working in UK labs to ensure that when a patient and surgeon choose The British Bite Mark, they have the assurance and peace of mind that comes with choosing to stay within this highly regulated system to ensure maximum patient safety.
We’ve all made a huge commitment to putting the patient first, and I feel honoured to have been allowed to take part in this campaign alongside some of the best people I have ever met in my life (from any profession)
The Dental Laboratories Association have worked long and hard to get this initiative from a small initial campaign, to one that has been adopted Nationally, and is now getting International interest.
It will be no surprise that the first thing we did upon opening nexus dental laboratory was to become a DLA member, followed very closely by being a British Bite Mark Laboratory.
The next step for the laboratory will be DAMAS accreditation.
We’re proud to announce the latest exciting stage of my life journey
As many people are now aware I have decided that it’s time for a fresh start, and I would like to share this with you.
We’ve always had a great passion for dental technology because of the true and meaningful difference we make to peoples lives with the work we do in collaboration with the rest of the highly skilled dental team
For us the core of this is the cooperation, communication and extremely high skill set that is involved within the dental team.
Because of this, there could only be one name for the new company
For us this name is key to what great dental technology really is. Great communication between a connected group focussed on ensuring the best patient outcomes possible.
Through our upcoming lectures, training, consultancy and management system implementation days we hope to share the knowledge that can support the whole dental team. By embracing these new systems it will free up skilled technician time and allow us to all focus on the most important factor in any dental environment. The patient.
We have recently been involved in many meetings and training sessions in the last month, which we’ll post the updates from onto the blog this week.
We’re passionate about great technology, so we will be continuing to lecture, train and consult throughout May.
We are currently involved in plans to provide a completely new dental laboratory, which is completely digital, and does not use the traditional wax and cast methods at all on site. It’s been amazing to see the technology evolve over the last few years, and now we believe that the solutions have matured to a point where we have the opportunity to offer patients unique solutions by embracing Digital workflows and CAD/CAM technology throughout the workflow.
It’s Mayday, time for a new beginning……
